After seeing his score of 89/100, a contestant in a stand-up comedy show became very happy because he thought he didn’t do well and was expecting it to be under 80.
His happiness was short-lived after discovering that he came in second because the first scored a 90.
“One point? Did I lose because of one point? I’d be happier if my score were under 80!”
One moment, he wasn’t expecting to win. But the moment he found out he nearly won, he got so upset that he wished his score was lower.
We human beings are funny, aren’t we? We are very good at making ourselves miserable by comparing ourselves with others.
Why? Is it because we’re competitive, or we’re just nuts?
Competitive? Who are we competing with? Why are we competing in the very first place?
There are far too many variables in our lives to compare or compete ourselves with one another. It’s not fair, or wise, to do that!
All of us are dealt with a different set of cards. We’re supposed to play this game of life with ourselves, not others.
The amount of random things happening is beyond our control. What we can control is our focus on how to play our cards to the best of our ability, and yes, screw the “competition!”
I know. With social media being a huge part of our life, not comparing ourselves with others is easier said than done.
For me, I unfollow (not unfriend) all those who post nothing other than their self-aggrandising “moments” (be it reel or real), their miseries, and their come-like-me selfies. Okay, those who only post about their MLM products get my unfollow, too!
I only read posts that are edifying, encouraging, and educational.
Now my wall is very Marie Kondo-like. Clean and minimal.
What about yours?
PS: I follow the Barking Cat pots because his posts are edifying, encouraging, and educational. Maybe you should follow him, too. ?
