Is specialisation overrated?

When I started going solo as a web designer in 2000, I had to learn how to code and write copy myself because I couldn’t afford to hire copywriters and coders.

That’s when I had an epiphany.

Knowing how to code made me a better designer because I knew the limitations and possibilities of what I could and couldn’t do technically.

Because of my coding knowledge, I came up with aesthetically pleasing and functional web design ideas that no designer or coder could ever come up with on their own.

Learning how to code made me a better designer.

It was the same with copywriting.

I knew what combination of words and images to use to evoke emotions that encouraged the site visitors to take the clients’ necessary actions. Something that no designer or copywriter could do it alone, too.

Learning how to write made me a better designer.

Everyone says we should specialise and that we shouldn’t be “jack of all trades”.

In my experience, I found the opposite to be true.

Every new skill I learned made me better at what I was already doing.

What’s your take on this?
