Yes and no.
Yes, when you’re in the hospitality, retail and services industries where the customer is king, and you’re desperate for a quick sale, like a salesperson wanting the rich Tai Tai to buy his $5000 handbag.
No, when you adopt an expert advisor posture and come from an angle where you know what’s best for your customers. Like a fashion consultant telling her rich Tai Tai client that the $5000 handbag makes her look like Santa Claus and recommends another handbag to her even though she may make a lesser commission.
The former is looking for a quick one-off sale and the latter for a lasting relationship.
So, how do you look at yourself?
A “Yes, sir! You’re always right, sir!” order taker? Or a professional advisor who offers what’s best for the customers and is not afraid to go against their impractical or unreasonable requests?
Strive to be the latter. You may lose some customers. But you’ll for sure get better ones and higher job satisfaction.
So, no. The customer is NOT always right. Only the right customer is always right.
Remember, you’re not a doormat.
