To Cope or Not to Cope?

Q: “How many psychiatrists are needed to change a light bulb?”

A:”One. That’s provided the light bulb wants to change.”

But alas we can’t have change without loss or pain, which is why so often people say they want change but nonetheless stay exactly the same.

Who doesn’t want to be relieved of an affliction?

But the thought of being divested of a crutch, or of having nothing else to whine about is at times so much more frightening than the relief itself that we choose to live with the affliction.

It’s silly isn’t it? But such is the lives of many – avoidance – a simple way of coping by not having to cope.
