A combination of the Japanese words “iki” (生き), which translates to “life,” and “gai” (甲斐), which is used to describe the value or worth, ikigai is all about finding joy in life through purpose.
In other words, your ikigai is what gets you up every morning and keeps you going. It is why you do what you do, the reason you continue to live.
One of the keys to being happy is doing what you think is important to you. It doesn’t have to be important to anyone else but you.
For me, it’s about going for my run at 5 am. Coupled with my audiobook or favourite podcast, my run is either a one-hour meditation or a mobile classroom.
Almost no one will notice except me. Through my “little” form of ikigai, I start my day with some fresh air and sunshine. Since my mind is relaxed while doing this simple task, I often think of new creative ideas during this time.
An ikigai can be totally silly or very important. As long as it brings some joy and creativity to your life, you can make it your ikigai.
Here are some Ikigai examples and ideas:
- Watering a plant.
- A daily walk around your neighbourhood.
- Making a fancy cup of tea or coffee in the morning.
- Walking the dog.
- Making meals for loved ones.
- Raking leaves.
- Doing a meditation.
So, what’s your ikigai?
