Whose ass are they trying to cover?

Do you ever read those “disclaimer” or “warning” texts at the end of every corporate email? If you do, do you know what they mean? Do you know if they’re even legally binding?

I don’t know whether these “warnings” are legally binding or not, but I read them at times for the fun of it.

Last week, I received a MARKETING email from UOB bank with the following “warning”:

=======
UOB EMAIL DISCLAIMER

Any person receiving this email and any attachment(s) contained, shall treat the information as confidential and not misuse, copy, disclose, distribute or retain the information in any way that amounts to a breach of confidentiality. If you are not the intended recipient, please delete all copies of this email from your computer system. As the integrity of this message cannot be guaranteed, neither UOB nor any entity in the UOB Group shall be responsible for the contents. Any opinion in this email may not necessarily represent the opinion of UOB or any entity in the UOB Group.

It’s a MARKETING email. In other words, it’s a cold email sent without asking whether I want to receive them or not. And yet they have the cheek to “warn” me not to share it with anyone! Seriously?

These warning texts are like telling me, “Hey! I walked out of the house naked by accident. So, you’re not supposed to laugh at me, take photos and share them with others,” Duh! ?

Such warning texts on emails tell us that companies are doing that to cover their asses. It’s all about them and nothing about the recipients. Don’t you think so?

I told you I liked to challenge status-quo thinking, didn’t I? ?
