You only need to ask

Recently, I was looking for a 27” 4k monitor to replace my 24” one. Since I’ve had a good experience with Dell, I went to Dell Singapore’s website to look for one.

I spotted one which was being retailed at $839.00. I googled the model to see whether the reviews on this monitor were positive or negative. While googling, I found the exact model listed for $749 in Shopee!

The $90 difference raised my CSI antenna. Could the one listed on Shopee be a used, fake, or even a damaged one? To my surprise, it was brand new and also came with a 3-year warranty, which was the same as Dell.

So, I called Dell and inquired whether this seller was an authorised reseller or some parallel importer who honoured the warranty themselves instead of Dell. He confirmed that they were an authorised reseller. However, he gave an ambiguous answer about the warranty though.

“Is it worth paying $90 less and risk a warranty that may be shorter than three years?” was what raced through my mind immediately.

Hence, I tried my luck and asked the Dell representative the $90 question, “Can you match the price listed on Shopee? If yes, I’ll get direct from Dell.”

He said, “Yes, I can,” and I said, “Yay!”

Now I have another thing to look forward to… 🙂

You see, guys, contrary to popular belief, big brands do give discounts. You only need to ask.

You’ll get a 50-50 chance of a yes when you ask. But if you don’t, the answer will always be no.
