Does it pay to tell the truth?

I used to have a good friend. Yes, used to.

This good friend claimed he didn’t like fake people and always appreciated other people telling him the truth.

And telling the truth was what I did. Maybe I did it more often than he could handle.

This friend of mine gets impressed easily by people claiming they can help him generate high returns for his money. Something like 20% a month, guaranteed. I told him that even the investment guru, Warren Buffett’s average return was only about 20% plus-minus a year. So how was it possible that these people could give him a guaranteed 20% return a month? If they’re so good, they wouldn’t need his money.

This happened more times than I can remember. But he didn’t listen and lost his money to these scammers. Of course, he wouldn’t admit that it was the scammer’s fault because doing so would mean it was his fault for not listening to me, too.

He likes to circulate fake news. I told him that even if he had meant it for fun, he could be brought to task by the authority. Finally, someone in one of our WhatsApp groups shot him down for sending a piece of fake advice on how to kill the COVID-19 virus.

The funny thing is that he blamed it on me and shut me off totally. He even told some of our common friends about me, encouraging them to shut me off, too.

Of course, the good ones didn’t believe what he said and relayed the message to me, while some chose to believe him and shut me off.

This episode caused me to wonder whether it’s good to tell people the truth even though they have openly said they appreciated the truth.

What about you? Do you have similar experiences – getting cut off for telling the truth?
