Does our thinking come from us?

Think about it. When we were toddlers, we lived in a world with rules and regulations set by our parents and elder siblings. We followed all the do’s and don’ts to become good boys and girls and be rewarded.

In school, not only did we have to follow the set of rules created by our teachers, but we also had to follow some unwritten rules set by our friends. Or else we’d be punished (by the teachers) and ostracised (by our friends).

We couldn’t wait to grow up to set our own rules and live for ourselves.

Now that we’ve grown up and started working, we have to follow another set of rules – the company’s. Wait, did I mention our seniors also give us some hidden rules they set, too?

So, can I not safely say that we’re not totally free? Even if we’re given the so-called “freedom of speech”, isn’t our thinking shaped by all the rules and regulations handed to us since we’re young?

Unless we’re a rebellious person since young, most of our behaviours and thoughts are formed by our environment, with rules set by people who are more powerful than us. No?

Here are some questions for your musing:

Are we totally free?

Does our thinking really come from us? Or is it a result of the environments we grew up in?
