Don’t be like that “Will you marry me?” Dave.

In his mid-30s, Dave is someone who would like to meet his future wife. He figures that the best place to meet his Mrs Right would be in places where single ladies hang out.

So, he cruises around some pubs looking for Mrs Right.

He sees a pretty stranger sitting alone, walks up to her and asks, “Will you marry me?” She looks at him, rolls her eyes and says, “Are you drunk?” and walks away.

Dave keeps doing this to strangers after strangers.

What do you think will happen? Probably a whole lot of nos. Perhaps a few laughs, maybe even a drink to his face.

Granted, Dave doesn’t exist in real life (or maybe he does). But have you met any insurance agents, salespersons, real estate agents, or MLMers like David?

Those who, the first time they see you, they want you to buy their products/services or join their MLM programme?

I’ve met plenty – both offline and online.

The typical online ones behave like this:

  • They send you a friend’s request;
  • After you’ve accepted them, they invite you to like their FB or LinkedIn page; or
  • All they ever post about are how great their products, services, or MLM programmes are.

Of course, I’m a polite person. I don’t throw water at their face. I unfriend them before they can send me a PM asking the as-if-they-really-mean-it “Nice to meet you” message.

So, please don’t be like Dave and ask, “Will you marry me?” the first time you meet someone.

Social media is a place where you get social. Start with a first date instead.
