Module 1 – What is Coaching?

Mentor Coach: Mel Leow

22nd Feb 2023

Last night, I attended my first lesson on coaching by Mel Leow, an ICF Master Certified Coach. He’s the founder of Catalyst Coach.

Although Coach Mel has expounded on a lot of important points about coaching, like:

Coaching is like a dance and partnership. The coach gives space for the dance to happen.

A coach is like a mirror. He holds up the mirror for the coachee to reflect and yet will not get in their way because the mirror is covering the coach’s face.

However, what caught my attention the most was the following:

A coach has to be curious but not a busybody.

Hmm. At what point will my curiosity turn me into a busybody?

When do I stop asking questions?

How will I know whether the person would deem I’m a busybody or a curious cat?

What if my sincere curiosity makes that person uncomfortable? Am I a busybody to him/her?

A question that is ok in one culture may be considered taboo in another.

So, what gives?

Will there ever be a definite answer?

Did you notice even in this ‘reflection’, I ask many questions?

Curiosity may kill the cat. But hey, I’m The Barking Cat. So, I’ll keep asking questions until the person I’m talking to says, “Please, can you not be a nosy parker?
