After a long courtship, the person you love finally says, “I do,” but with a condition. You must give away your favourite 7-year-old pet dog because he/she is afraid of it. Will you agree?
Imagine this: The above is a topic of a debate, and before it begins, the audience would vote for either a ”Yes, I will” or a “No, I won’t”, and the two opposing teams would try to swing the votes with their points.
You’re in the team tasked to say, “No, I won’t.” But deep in you, your answer is “Yes, please!” because, in real life, you have cynophobia (dog phobia). How would you put your points across?
Guess what? This was a debate TV program topic, and one of the debaters, who happened to have cynophobia, was in the team that would not give away the dog!
I like to watch debate shows. No, not the political ones where two parties shout at each other. But the ones in which two teams debate about what we experience daily. Before each debate begins, I will take sides and see whether the opposing team can convince me otherwise or not.
I like watching them because it reminds me always to wear the opposing person’s cap and try to think what they think whenever I’m in an argument with someone. Who knows? The person may have a point!
What about you? Do you always think from the other person’s point of view in an argument? If not, maybe you’d like to start watching some debate programs?
